If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
James is describing what it looks like to be truly religious. Someone who calls themselves Christian or religious must have clean language and shouldn’t talk bad. And a person who is a Christian or religious should show God’s kindness by helping the people who can’t help themselves and keep themselves not like the world.
God wants me to watch what I say and how I talk. He also wants me to help the helpless and to not be the same as the rest of the world.
Dear Father, I pray that you will keep my religion pure and undefiled. I pray that you will help me to say the right words and not find wrong things coming from my mouth. Help me to be more compassionate towards people who need help and guide me who to help and how to help them. I Jesus’ name, amen.
