Does God Call People To Be Rich?
People seem to believe that Christians should be poor. Somehow it’s more holy to be humble and live in poverty. Yes, it’s good to be humble, and yes it not sinful to be in poverty, but being rich isn’t sinful either.
God has a plan for everyone, and He doesn’t call everyone to be rich. But I believe that He does, in fact call some people to be rich.
“Money is the root of all evil,” does not appear in the Bible. If you’ve ever heard someone say that, it’s because they heard it from someone else, who heard it from someone else, who heard it from someone who was misquoting the Bible.
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
1 Timothy 6:10
Money itself is not the root of evil. It’s the love of money that’s bad. You don’t even have to have any to love it.
Bread is made for laughter,
and wine gladdens life, and money answers everything.
The Bible doesn’t say that money is bad or having money is bad. God knows that “money answers everything.” Money is a tool to further the Gospel.
Think about it. How do missionaries spread the Gospel in other countries? How does a church pay for the lights and sound equipment? How does the pastor pay for food or clothes? Where do all those tracts that get passed out at the parade come from? It’s all paid for with money.
Okay, so yeah, money pays for all the stuff that we do to spread the Gospel, but that doesn’t mean that God wants people to be rich. Well, it sort of does. God wants us to be generous. He wants to use people to provide for other people. How much more generous can a person be if they have a lot of money? Do you think that you could give more to your church if you had more money? Could you give more to missionaries? Could you drop more than just a few cents into a red bucket at Christmas time?
There’s also a certain respect and influence that comes with being rich. How often do you hear about a poor guy being friends with the president or prime ministers? How often do you hear about CEOs hanging out with the guys from down the street? If all Christians were poor, who would minister to the rich people who don’t know Christ
I’m not saying that everyone should be rich. I’m not saying that being rich is God’s calling for you. But I am saying that our collective attitude towards wealth needs to change. Wealth isn’t a bad thing. It’s not better to be poor rather than rich. God has a calling and a plan for all of His children. Some people He has called to be rich and the wealth that God has blessed them with has great use in the Kingdom of God.
