I Lost The Baby!
Before church, Lydia was working in the church’s coffee cart and I was watching the kids. When we do that, I let our three year old run around and play in the foyer, but I have to keep a close eye on our one year old Oliver to make sure he doesn’t get into anything or get hurt.
Ollie was crawling around on the floor around my feet and I was talking to my friend Mike. As we talked, I suddenly realized that Oliver was gone. He wasn’t by my feet, I didn’t see him crawling around anywhere. He was gone.
I lost the baby!
I walked away and started looking for him. I made sure Lydia didn’t see me looking for him. He wasn’t by the drinking fountain, he wasn’t on the other side of the coffee cart, he wasn’t in the foyer at all.
How far could he have crawled? Someone must have picked him up and taken him.
During all of this panic, I was still pretty calm. I knew that at my church, Ollie is loved. The community at my church is like a family. I know that there are so many people here that won’t let anything bad happen to my son.
If I see one of the kids at church walking away with a stranger that I don’t recognize, I’m going to find out who that person is before they get very far with that kid. I know that there are a lot of people at my church who will do the same with my kids. I know that my kids are safe here.
Is there a place you can go and feel that safe? It really should be your church. Church is supposed to be the safest place in town. An inviting place where anyone can come and hear about God, and know that no one is going to take advantage of them or hurt them or their kids. And if someone tries, then the people in the church will rise up and put a stop to it. If your church doesn’t feel that safe, then you need to make it more safe.
I found Ollie. He was with Rachel. She came over and asked if she could take him while I was talking tot Mike. I forgot. So did Mike.
