Jesus Saves! & Other Evangelism Techniques I Used to Judge
I see them all over the place, signs that say “Jesus Saves!” or “Repent Now!” or “Jesus is the Reason for the Season!” Usually I would see these and think, “Those don’t do any good. Those people need to just take down that sign.”
Every time I go to a parade, there’s usually at least one parade float that is basically a bunch of Christians smiling and holding signs that say something along the lines of, “Repent or you will spend an eternity in hell!” When they walked past I would think, “They need to change their tone. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.”
I’ve never been a fan of The Way of the Master. I completely understand the thought behind it, I like that it seems to work, but other than Ray Comfort or Todd Friel, everyone I’ve seen doing it just seems a little mean.
Tracts? Do I really need to bring those cheesy things up?
All of these evangelism techniques have a few things in common.
- They annoy me.
- None of them are as effective as I think they should be.
- Each and every one of these techniques have brought more souls into a saving relationship with Christ than I have in my entire life.
A little over a year ago I was driving past a poorly made sign that said “Jesus Saves.” I thought all the thoughts that I usually think when I see something like that, but this time I felt convicted. I heard God’s voice in my heart saying, “Why are you judging them? At least they’re doing something.”It’s not my place to judge people who are actually trying to win the lost.
It hit me all at once. I have been sitting here looking down on all of these different ways that people are trying to win the lost, but I’m not doing anything. That sign might not be doing anything for 99% of the people who drive by, but there is still 1% of people that it does help. It’s not my place to judge people who are actually trying to win the lost. The number one priority for a Christian is to win the lost.
The number one priority for a Christian is to win the lost. Jesus commanded us to do it. There are a lot of different methods that work for some people, but not for everyone. The fact is, if you are doing something, it’s always better than doing nothing.
If you evangelize with a heart to see souls saved, you will see people saved.
I certainly still believe that some forms of evangelism are better than others, but I don’t judge other Christians for using a cheesy method anymore. I truly believe that if you go out and evangelize with a heart to see souls saved, no matter what form of evangelism you use, you will see people saved. God is faithful to bring you the people who need to hear the message you are preaching.
