Jesus & Money: Do These 2 Things And He’ll Do The Rest
It’s easy to get stressed out about money, especially if you are married and have kids. Money doesn’t grow on trees, they say, you have to work for it. But even if you are working your butt off, you still don’t always have as much money as you need. Money causes a lot of stress for most everybody, but it doesn’t have to cause that much stress for you.
What am I talking about? Do I have a plan that I can give you that’ll make you a bunch of money? Can I show you the secret to leverage the power of debt in your favor? Maybe (since this is a Christian blog) I know the perfectly phrased prayer that will make God open the floodgates of heavenly money into your life! I don’t.God is the provider for your family, not you.
I do know something that God told me when I was stressing about money. He said, “Josiah, I am the provider for your family, not you.”
If you are a Christian, and you know how to follow directions, you have an amazing promise that Jesus told us about in the book of Matthew.
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
Jesus starts off by pointing out the birds. Birds don’t worry about food because God feeds them, don’t you think that God can do the same for you?
And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Jesus talks about clothes, too. He says that the grass gets cut down and thrown away, but God clothes it with beautiful flowers anyway. If He’ll clothe something that gets thrown away, won’t He do the same for someone who doesn’t get thrown away?
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
God knows that you need food and clothes and shelter. He’s no dummy. But you don’t need to worry about those things as long as you follow this single little instruction. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.
This is the part that people tend to skip. Jesus says that He will take care of us, but He doesn’t just do it for nothing. He specifically says that He’ll take care of us if we do what He wants. Let’s talk a little bit about the two things Jesus is asking us to do.
#1: Seek First the Kingdom of God
What does that mean? The Kingdom of God is His Church. He wants us to make more Christians. He wants us to go out and find unsaved people and tell them the Gospel. The first thing God wants us to do is win the lost.
#2: Seek His Righteousness
The second thing He wants us to do is to seek His righteousness. This means He wants us to lay down our old sinful ways and be like Him. He wants us to seek after being Like Christ. The secret formula to success is to obey Jesus’ commandments.
If you are worried about money, like many of us are, you can relax. As a Christian, Jesus promises that He will provide for us, as long as we are bringing people to Christ and try to be like Him. In the end, I guess I do have a secret formula for success, the secret is obey Jesus’ commandments and He’ll take care of you.
